Definitely Makoto Furukawa, the popular voice actor, not Shin Furukawa, the anime staffer. Please fix.

I get the feeling that Comic Natalie forgot to mention the staff listed, because I had to got to the website to verify, and yeah major oversight on their end.

Not just Comic Natalie, almost every Japanese news website for some reason are not bothering with the staff.

Aside from the fact that Makoto is a seiyuu and Shin is a producer (and that people who know them know), how does one know which way 慎 is supposed to be translated? Just curious, as that credit threw me for a loop until you pointed out the error.

Makoto Furukawa is one of the most famous voice actors in the industry right now. If you’re into news-writing, it should be a name you would see constantly. Throw it into Google and he’s the first person to come up.
Also, the moment you click Shin Furukawa, it brings you to a staffer page with not one voice acting credit. It’s basic checking your work.
As for the kanji, it’s the same as having someone named David (normal pronunciation) and David (DAH-VEED). There’s multiple ways to read the name, but you can find out the reading of the person you’re looking for by doing a simple Google search.

Well, ok, I get that it was an error that shouldn't have happened in this case, but that was not my question. If neither of them were famous enough for a google page, how would you know which pronunciation was correct? Shin and Makoto are very different from David pronounced with a different accent on the syllables (maybe more akin to being told that John Ghoti is pronounced "John Fish"?).

Japanese characters tend to have multiple readings. I would verify on Japanese voice actor wikis and look for other works where their name was mentioned to fact-check.

Yes, I get that. Again, the fact-checking or lack thereof is not my question. If you run across a non-famous person's name and they're not in front of you to tell you how to read it, how do you know how to read it? It's not like there are furigana added to tell you. There've been times when it seems to me like you can read any name character however the named person chooses (e.g., kira kira names). Like Kazundo Gouda in GitS:SAC who remarks that no one can pronounce his name (they read it as Hitori rather than Kazundo), or Light Yagami, whose name is written 月 (moon) instead of 光 (light).
Anyway, didn't mean to derail the thread. I don't think there's an answer that will make sense to me.
