However, the most recent game in the series, Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate was ported to Nintendo Switch in 2020 and surpassed expectations. This paved the path for a new game in the series—one which is scheduled for release early next year.

That sounds about right. I remember grumbling for years (possibly even on ANN!) over how Shiren would probably find better footing now that roguelikes are a widely accepted genre, if they would just port them to Steam or Switch or something...finally!

I am a bit surprised they switched from the 2D sprites to the 3D, resembling the old box art more than anything - Tower of Fortune was originally made a longer time ago than it seems, I suppose.

I'm a little bit let down by the trailer - Tower of Fortune is incredibly colorful and the sprites are borderline Minish Cap-levels of charming. Shiren on the Wii has a VERY attractive, human-proportioned world that is both easy to read at a glance and exciting to explore.

The trailer makes the new game seem very flat/brown grey. I'm not at all impressed by the character models. It's good that they're going with another game, but it feels like I'm looking at a pretty major step backwards with this trailer.

It's also a pipe dream, but I wouldn't mind seeing them do a 3D behind-the-character action title that requires precision like Demon's Souls. The Wizardry MMO that closed down years ago was a really neat sort of look into what a Shiren X Demon's Souls could look like.
