I'm kind-of thinking the Oshi no Ko talk maybe should have spent some time with how Akane bounces back (the team putting a social-media presentation together showing her/their side of the story), plus her deep-study followed up by capturing the essence of Ai.
(Also the talk about how you have to create a persona for social media in order to separate yourself from what happens to that persona is pretty much the premise of the show.) |

When James said he didn't think there would really be any teen reality dating shows like the one depicted in Oshi no Ko I got curious and did a bit of research.
I used search phrases like "high school reality dating show" and apparently there's a a few. I could be getting this mixed up but all the shows I found references to seem to be produced or broadcast by the same company - AbemaTV and are quite popular with middle and high school girls in Japan according to this article. Honestly from what was shown of the reality show behind the scenes on Oshi no Ko it didn't seem like an especially abusive or high pressure environment. Some reality shows are purposefully set up to pit their participants against each other and this show seemed more low key than that. I'm not saying the show's producers did nothing wrong especially when it came to picking and choosing what they broadcast for ratings but most of the pressure to perform Akane was experiencing seemed to be coming from outside the set. |
