For those who care about the gory technical statistical details, this season I'm changing the algorithm. You may recall that last season we saw some really weird and turbulent rankings. So this season I'm trying out Ranked Pairs instead of Schulze.

If you wish, you can compare Fall 2023 with Schulze vs Fall 2023 with Ranked Pairs. It may not be obvious from the graphs, but from the numbers I ran, it seems like Ranked Pairs results in fewer inconsitencies resulting from non-transitive orderings.

Present!

So of the series in this season's preview guide that didn't make the cut for streaming reviews, all but six had enough votes to make these rankings:

  1. Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!
  2. Delusional Monthly Magazine
  3. High Card Season 2
  4. Mr. Villain's Day Off
  5. Snack Basue
  6. Synduality: Noir Season 2

I'd be interested in your analysis of how some of those "weird" rankings happened relative to the method and how that relates to intransitivity. Maybe an example or two in detail?

Anyway, the reason I came was to comment on the initial rankings. Got a kick out of Gushing over Magical Girls being so much higher than Chained Soldiers, two shows that seemed were similarly "H-y" and might be regarded similarly poorly. But below even the latter, the much better reviewed 'Tis Time for Torture right next to very poorly reviewed My Instant Death Ability etc. Makes you wonder what the ANN crowd are about...

I wonder why Blue Exorcist is tanking so hard out the gate? I'd think people who didn't like it, or still care about it anymore after so long away wouldn't be watching and rating it, and it's been looking pretty good to me so far.

Just because something is highly praised doesn't mean it's popular. And vice versa.

3 things in the cummulative:

1. I clearly underestimated the love for Dangers in my Heart.
2. I am glad I am not the only one who found Solo Leveling meh.
3. Poor Chained Soldier. It turns out boobs are not enough to make something likable.

Until the ranking based on response from the viewer base at large happens, one can only base expectations on a few reviewers' opinions assuming they might be representative. What this shows is that in this case for these shows, they weren't representative but from what I've observed here, that isn't often the case . Or at least, people here generally seem to follow the reviewers' views it seems. Some of us here don't and it would be an interesting analysis to compare viewers' and reviewers' rankings.

Unless I've wildly misunderstood how this graph system works, I'm pretty sure it reflects ANN readers own votes from here: animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime/episodes/latest

AFAIK, reviewer's scores aren't weighed into these.

Not sure how you got that from what I said. I was responding to this

I was pointing out the reason for my expectation that the ratings of the shows in question by the ANN readership might have been different based on what the reviewers' said in the Winter Preview Guide assuming they tend to rate similarly to the readers. Not that I thought the latter were involved in any way.

Aw, man. That kinda makes me sad, but I can't say I'm surprised. Feels like the energy for High Card has really died down (although I never did seek out information on how popular it was outside of ANN), and Cherry Magic is sweet, but BL is unfortunately a niche interest in terms of popularity in my experience. Plus, the animation has... been very wanting.
