I remember a long time ago on Comic Alliance, Pluto was used as an example of "The Gritty Comic Book Reboot Done Right" in stark contrast to "popular" works like Watchmen or even movies like Man of Steel. The writer of the article said that it succeeded in maintaining the core themes and ideas of the original, while giving Urasawa a chance to put this own mark on it, and at the same time not disrespecting the original. Too many reboots/reimaginings often forget about the original work in an effort to make something "cool" and wind up cynical instead.

Excellent article.

The first time I ever ran into this storyline was in the game Astro Boy: Omega Factor. It's a great game and in it the greatest robot on earth stuff is in there for boss battles. I really liked that game growing up and remember hearing that Pluto was related to that part of the game. The Pluto manga is a favorite of mine and after watching the beginning of the show I'm excited to dig into more.

Well this is quite a interesting history of how Pluto evolved from Astro Boy/Tetsuwan Atom. I'm currently watching the anime on Netflix (finished watching 2 episodes). I hope to see the anime get popular enough it would renew an interest in Astro Boy in general.

I do see Pluto get a surge in manga sales and interest, I wonder if it will extend to Astro Boy too.
