If I were to play this, would I need to play any of the prior games first? I was thinking of trying it at a later date.

Not at all! The story is largely standalone. The characters allude to prior references but there's never any kind of lore-dump that would require you to play the previous games in order to understand what's going on. The main menu also has a cute video filling you in on the broad strokes of the prior games, but this game nevertheless stands alone. Ryza's a cute alchemist who loves her friends and they go on an adventure, that's the long and short of it.

The first two Ryza games are very fun and worth checking out if the cozy vibes resonate with you, and it's cute to see Ryza grow over three games (and four in-game years), but you can just start from Ryza 3 and be perfectly fine.

What about romance? Is there anything in the game or its epilogue that gives us any hint about the romantic lives of the 4 friends? Also, spoiler[does Bos end up joining Ryza and the gang? Because the events of the second game hinted that he was training so that he could join them on their adventures.]

The sections of the game we played didn't betray any kind of romantic sentiment, which is probably not really part of the story anyway. These guys are in love with ADVENTURE. spoiler[As for Bos: yes, he joins the party. Wink]
